Art & Community (Arte e Comunidade)Introduction Chapter (2015)
Arte e Comunidade (Art & Community) is a project that examines the expansion of performing arts in a collaborative manner with communities across the globe. It also focuses on sharing these arts with smaller groups of people and having them participate in the performances as well as connecting with the processes involved in making it happen.
Coordinated by Hugo Cruz, this book recaptures those moments, and itself is also based on a very collaborative process, made of texts from more than a dozen different authors. Following this scheme, White Studio also invited several designers to be responsible for designing a given chapter of the book. The resulting object with totally different graphic and editorial approaches, amasses a total of 21 chapters laid out through more than 550 pages. Printing each chapter on a different paper stock was also taken into consideration.
I had the chance to design the “opening curtains” of the book — the introduction chapter. As you can see on the selection of spreads below, design-wise, my goal was to reach a very modest look and avoid to present the next chapters in a shouting manner. With a very classical and neutral tone, the layout displays each paragraph merged into the next, conceptually exhibiting the interaction of people in community and performance, which is again, the concept of the project throughout its whole.
